When snowflakes start to fall, when we rush outside to play and come back inside happy and tired, with red noses, then all I can think is:

Soon Christmas will be here!

That’s when I start counting the sleeps until Santa Claus arrives
on his sleigh: 30 sleeps until Christmas, 29 sleeps until Christmas,
28 sleeps until Christmas … It’s hard to wait!

You have probably already guessed that Max, my little brother, and me, we love Christmas. Usually, it seems like forever until Christmas comes, and the weeks of Advent seem to go by so slowly, because we are in a hurry to celebrate and open our gifts. But this year, all of that changed. Do you want me to tell you what happened?

It all started with this wonderful letter:

Dear Emma and Max,

As I’m sure you know,
Christmas is just around the
corner. This is when children who have been good throughout the year get their re- ward. I’m very busy right now so I have
asked one of my favourite elves to lend a hand. He will be arriving soon to stay with you for a while. On December 24 th , he will tell me whether or not you’ve been good
and if you deserve the gifts you’ve asked
me for. I’m sure you will have a lot of fun
with the elf but first …
you have to catch him!

Be careful: he is nice but he is also
very mischievous. Ho! Ho! Ho!

Your friend

I’m so excited to meet this elf but … how are we going to catch him?

First attempt:

— We have to make a trap, says Max.
Max and Daddy make a trap using an old shoe box.
They spread soft cotton wool all around, so it looks just like
the snow at the North Pole.

Usually, I’m slow to get out of bed but today I walk with springs! I wake up my brother and we run to the kitchen, hoping to find the elf caught in our trap – but all we find is a big mess of flour on the kitchen floor.

It’s pretty funny,
but now we need to find another way to catch him.
