Afrakoma, Warrior Princess
Chapter One
Kenkaase
rincess Afrakoma woke up in a cold sweat, she sat P up. This was the third successive time she was dreaming about Prince Gyakari after her return from Nton. The dream was always the same: she was walking in her palace gardens with Gyakari, the love of her life. It always started with the two of them very happily chasing each other in the garden but whenever Gyakari was about to kiss her, she would wake up. Tonight’s dream had been very intense and Afrakoma was becoming more and more frustrated with her desire to have Gyakari at all costs. She knew it was an impossible dream because the prince was married to Princess Bakoma of Kubease. But . . . she had to have Gyakari for herself. After all,she thought,Gyakari was promised to me first and I will never accept his marriage to Bakoma.Out loud she shouted, “Never!” as she simultaneously shot out of her canopied bed. She walked to the window and stared with unseeing eyes at the stars twinkling in the clear moonlight. She began to pace, wondering what to do to win Gyakari. True, Gyakari had made

it clear that he was in love with his wife but she also knew that according to custom, she could still be his wife. She had tried to forget Gyakari by setting her cap at his younger brother, Prince Osei. Even though she knew he was a poor substitute, she felt she had to use Osei to break down Gyakari’s resistance to her. “After all, I’m a warrior princess,” she murmured in the dark, a mischievous smile lurking at the corners of her mouth. Beauty, brains and brawn were the three deadly combinations that PrincessAfrakoma wielded. As a warrior princess, standing at almost five feet nine inches, she was taller than most princesses of her day. Her beauty inspired many songs in her town and beyond. Her skilful handling of different weapons was legendary and her courage and exploits in wartime were well-known. She had everything — wealth, beauty and fame — but the elusive Prince Gyakari, heir to the throne of Nton. She pined for the only thing that would make her life complete. Standing six feet tall and famous for his bravery and good looks, the prince was every woman’s dream. His family had asked for Afrakoma’s hand in marriage to him but fate had dealt her a cruel blow. Some circumstances, including her father Nana Poku’s death, had prevented the consummation of their betrothal and by the time she came out of mourning, Gyakari was already betrothed to Princess Bakoma. Gyakari had been in love with Bakoma since she came to live at the palace as a young child. They had grown up together and played together. Since Bakoma was not a princess, Gyakari could not make her his first wife notwithstanding his strong love for her. Bakoma’s entry into the royal household had been occasioned by propitious circumstances. She had been abandoned by

fleeing warriors in a cave on Maame Adwoa Dapaa’s farm. Nana Karikari, Chief of Nton, had asked Maame Dapaa (who incidentally was childless), to take care of the baby till her parentage could be ascertained. She had grown into an attractive ten-year old and had been sent to live at the palace to keep the queen’s only daughter, Princess Boatemaa, company. At that time Maame Dapaa was serving as a counsellor to the queen. Bakoma grew up surrounded by Gyakari and his siblings. Even as custom dictated that Bakoma could not be Gyakari’s first wife, the chief and his elders also concluded that Bakoma deserved a better position than to be a second wife when with her beauty and poise she was fit for a prince. Painfully, the two lovers had had to comply with the agonising decision to desist from seeing each other and a betrothal had subsequently been arranged between Gyakari and Afrakoma. The betrothal ceremony was attended by many from different royal houses in Asante, and among these was Prince Boakye of Kubease. Prince Boakye had been struck by the strong resemblance between Bakoma and his sister, Princess Bensuaa. Unable to shake off the observation, the prince’s mind had been jolted about an unsolved family mystery. Through a series of discreet inquiries, it was discovered that Bakoma was the lost child from the royal house of Kubease, the daughter of the formidable Krotweamansa Takyi II. The propitious discovery of Bakoma’s true status as a princess had effectively prevented the consummation of the union between Gyakari andAfrakoma. But Afrakoma was used to getting what she wanted. She was not ready to concede defeat; she was prepared to do anything, including subterfuge, to get Gyakari back.

Awuraa, the princess’s personal aide, woke up in her corner of the chamber to find her mistress pacing again. She stood up from her bed, went close and whispered, “Nana, couldn’t you asleep again?” “It’s the same dream again, Awuraa. How am I ever going to get Gyakari back?” “Nana, how about the ultimatum you gave to Prince Osei at Nton?” “Yes that. You know that it was only a ruse to get Gyakari back. He loves his brother and seeing that Osei has become interested in Bakoma’s sister Bensuaa, I believe Gyakari would do anything to protect his brother and please his wife Bakoma.” She paused and resumed her pacing. “I have come to a conclusion. I am going to put pressure on Osei to yield to me. He compromised my position by coming to my bed chambers at Nton. I will see how Gyakari will help him.” Awuraa laughed and said, “You got him there, Nana. Pretending to be poisoned and getting Prince Osei to come to you. Indeed, if you make it public that you were poisoned under their roof it would cause a great scandal for their family so I believe you are on the right track.” Princess Afrakoma burst out in sudden anger, “How dare Gyakari reject me? I am Princess Afrakoma and I will choose whom I want to be my consort. Married or not, Gyakari will have to pay for this and I don’t care how!” “Nana, please calm down. The Nton royal family is strong and closely knit. Be very careful that you don’t offend all of them in your bid to get Prince Gyakari.” Afrakoma did not respond but went to sit on her bed, lamenting, “O why, why did I have to lose Gyakari, Awuraa?

He is my dream consort. I have control over everything I set my mind to do but where Gyakari is concerned, I cannot move him at all. You know when he was wounded in the war, I went to visit him purposely to attract his attention since Bakoma was away at Kubease. You know how I took great care of my appearance every day to woo him. I saw his interest in me but . . . but something held him back. Bakoma!” She spat out the name with contempt and got up. “I have to do something about her and very soon. Gyakari will rue the day he rejected me.” “Nana, may I caution you again to please be careful. I hear Prince Gyakari is like a lion where Princess Bakoma is concerned. Again, what makes you so sure that if the princess was out of his life he would turn to you?” “That is a good question but like I always say . . .” “I’ll think about it when I get there,” her maid finished her popular saying. They both laughed and Awuraa coaxed her back to bed. She knew that her mistress was in for a long battle and wondered how she would be able to help her.
