Where did human beings first create civilizations?
The first civilization began in Mesopotamia around 5000 BC. Today, most of the land where this ancient culture was located is in the modern-day country of Iraq. The meaning of “Mesopotamia” translates to “the lands that are between two rivers.”

The two rivers were the Tigris River and the Euphrates River. The Sumerians were the first to organize their society into what we think of today as a civilization. They created their own form of writing as well as rules for governing themselves. Each region of land was organized into a city-state and had its own king.
The king ruled the city as well as all the surrounding farmlands in that city-state. Each of the city settlements also had its own main god. The civilization that the Sumerians created influenced many of the subsequent civilizations in ancient times.
