The garden gnomes all live happily together in their toadstool houses near the pond in Pauline Green's garden. They are simply fanatical about recycling. Nothing is wasted if it can be reused or made into something beautiful. This is the story of how they came to live with Pauline and Neddy the goat, furnishing their new homes using bits and pieces humans throw away and living in harmony with the natural world. In 'At the Allotment' the fruits and vegetables are boasting about their merits. Each one thinks himself better in some way than all the others. Sunny the Scarecrow and Pete the Pixie have to keep the peace as best they can.

Chapter One
I expect you all help your parents with the recycling at home in your houses. We throw away too many things - things that perhaps we could reuse or other people may be able to use. They say one person’s rubbish is another’s treasure. What do you think about it?
There was once a special garden where the little people who lived there took recycling to great lengths. They were garden gnomes - the Recycling Garden Gnomes.
They lived in the back garden of a nice lady who lived alone with only her pet goat, Neddy, for company. Neddy lived in a small barn at the bottom of the garden. He was a very naughty goat. He used to eat everything he could get hold of in his reach (a lot of goats do, as many stories tell us).
In the pond near the barn lived a frog called Francis. He was very friendly with the two garden gnomes. Their names were Jim and Jason. Jim carried a fishing net and Jason a garden spade. They had been bought for Miss Pauline Green (the owner, who lived in the cottage belonging to the garden) by her niece Rose. Rose worked in the optician’s shop in the next town. She had thought they would help to keep her auntie’s garden looking a happy place.
Pauline loved the two gnomes and planned to buy more to fill up her little garden. She had asked Rose if she would drive her to the garden centre in the next town when she had her next morning off (Rose only worked at the optician’s in the afternoons).

Rose had said, “What about tomorrow morning? I’ll pick you up at ten o’clock.”
“Thank you, dear,” her aunt replied. “That would be lovely.”
That evening when Miss Green put Neddy into his barn for the night she told him that she would be bringing back more garden gnomes the next day from the garden centre.
Jim and Jason overheard what Miss Green had said and looked at each other. Jim nodded his head at Jason and Jason winked his left eye at Jim.
When Pauline had gone back into her cottage Jim said to Jason, “New gnomes tomorrow - hope they are as clever as us two!”
“What if they aren’t and they can’t talk and walk about at night like we can?” asked Jason.
“They will just have to stand still in the garden all the time and we can boss them about,” said Jim, chuckling.
