In this book, we’re going to talk about fun questions and answers concerning weather, water, and heat. So, let’s get right to it!

Question : Which country has more tornadoes than any other country?
Answer : The United States has more tornadoes than any other country worldwide, generally more than 1,200 every year. The reason for this is that the United States has a geographical area that spawns these storms. The area is called “Tornado Alley.”

Question : What is the Fujita Scale?
Answer : The Fujita Scale is a way to measure a tornado’s strength. A tornado that measures F0 on the scale causes very little damage. One that measures F5 is massive and will cause millions of dollars of damage and will kill a substantial number of people. F5 tornadoes have been known to travel at a speed of more than 300 miles per hour or 483 kilometers per hour. A tornado this powerful can pick houses up off their foundations and throw cars as if they were missiles.

Question : Is it true that tornadoes rotate differently in different hemispheres?
Answer : Surprisingly, this is true. Tornadoes located in the northern hemisphere generally spin with a counterclockwise motion. Those that are located in the southern hemisphere spin with a clockwise direction.

Question : What was the deadliest tornado on record?
Answer : The deadliest tornado worldwide occurred in 1989 in Bangladesh, India. About 1300 people were killed.
