Lessons learned
Technology has come a long way since theIndustrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, making transport a pleasure instead of a pain. Most of today’s forms of transport are fast, convenient, and comfortable. People travel all over the world without giving it much thought. A huge network of transport routes covers the globe on the ground, over water, and in the air. Astronauts even leave our planet and travel through space. Individual inventors have shown courage andenterpriseby following their dreams and trying to make things work. Unfortunately they did not always succeed. Those who try new things sometimes fail, especially when the new idea is a moving vehicle. However, others are often able to build on these failures and succeed.
From Cugnot to Sinclair The earliest failure in this book was the steam cart invented by NicolasJoseph Cugnot in 1769. This invention has been called the world’s first automobile, and though it was not successful, its failings showed others the way forward. Steam cars had a period of great success, before the water boiler was overtaken by the petrol engine. Today, engineers are looking at ways to replace petrol, and there are sure to be more mistakes along the way. The Sinclair C5 was such a mistake.
A white elephant? Many of the failures listed in this book, such as Concorde and the Hercules flying boat, have been called “white elephants”. This term means a useless possession that is expensive to maintain and impossible to sell. The phrase apparently comes from the story that the king of Siam gave a rare white elephant to a courtier who annoyed him. The king did this knowing that the animal would be costly to keep and could not be put to any practical use.
