About the desert
Deserts are some of the hottest and driest places in the world. But did you know they can also be cold? Deserts are found on every continent. They cover about one-fifth of Earth. Deserts are places that receive less than 25 centimetres (10 inches) of rain or snow every year.
Desert weather can be extremely harsh. But the desert biome is an important part of Earth. Some plants and animals that live in deserts aren’t found anywhere else. Many people also live there. In fact, about 1 billion people call deserts home.
