Chapter 1 Washed ashore
“Hey, Talia! How did your final report go?” asked my big brother, Benito. “Great! Ms Lee said I did a wonderful job,” I replied. Today was the last day of Year 6, and I had handed in my final report on whales. As Benny was home from university, he had helped me find books to use for my report. Benny is studying marine, or ocean, sciences at the nearby university. He is learning about whales and other marine animals. While home for the summer, he’s volunteering at the aquarium for one of his classes. “Oh, and I told Ms Lee that you were working at the aquarium this summer. Can we go to the aquarium today, Benny? Please?” I begged. “Not right now, but maybe we can go tomorrow,” Benny said, smiling.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved visiting the aquarium. It’s one of the most amazing places in my town. Where else can you touch sharks and stingrays and then walk over to visit sea lions? But my favourite spot has always been the huge beluga whale exhibit outside. I could watch and listen to those mammals all day.
