Chapter One
“Kendi!” a voice called sharply. I jumped out of my chair in surprise.
The voice was that of Mrs Mbathi, my Science and Technology teacher. She stood, armsakimbo, in front of the classroom. “Are we together?” she asked with a stern look.
1
I stared. Blank. I was not listening. I was daydreaming in class but I was not ready to admit it. I shrank in my chair.
“Kindly see me after class, Kendi,” said Mrs Mbathi firmly. “Okay,” I mumbled. There was nothing kind about her tone. I was in BIG trouble.
2
The school bell rang. Lesson over. I stood up quickly, hoping that Mrs Mbathi had forgotten about me. She had not. Mrs Mbathi walked with purpose to my desk. I shuffled my feet nervously as I waited.
We stood in silence until the last pupil had left the classroom. Then, she spoke. “Kendi, you are one of my BEST learners. This is the third time I have caught you daydreaming in class. Is anything wrong?” she asked.
