What Is a River Food Chain?
Rivers andstreams arefullofcreatures. Allthe plants, fish, birds, bears, otters, and beavers living nearby depend on one another for survival. So too do many other living things that you cannot see.
Everyorganismthat lives in a river obtains its food from a variety of sources, including plants, animals, dead or decaying matter, andbacteria. In a river in North America, for example, tiny caddis flylarvaeeat plantlike organisms calledalgae. Salmon feed on the caddis fly larvae. When a salmon dies, bacteria break down the remains intonutrients. The nutrients go back into the river. This suppliesenergyfor algae and other plants to grow. Then this process, called a food chain, starts all over again.
