Introducing Portugal
What do you know about Portugal? Perhaps you have watched their football team play or have gone there on holiday. Have you ever eaten Portuguese food? You may have learned about this country in history lessons. Would you like to know more about the country's past, geography, culture, and people?
Small but mighty Portugal is a small country in southwest Europe. The North Atlantic Ocean lies to the west and Spain borders Portugal to the east. The country covers an area of 92,090 square kilometres (35,556 square miles), making it slightly bigger than Ireland and Northern Ireland together.
Centuries ago, Portugal was one of the world's most powerful countries, with land and influence all around the world. Located on the edge of Europe, Portugal was well situated in an age of seafaring to settle and trade in new lands. Although the country is no longer one of the most powerful in the world, thelegacyof those wealthy times can still be seen in Portugal today.
A unique nation You might expect Portugal to have been dominated by its huge neighbour, Spain. However, although Spain has occupied Portuguese lands at various points in history, Portugal has resisted Spanish domination and has its own unique culture, cuisine, and language. Portuguese people are very proud of their fascinating country.
