Introducing the Philippines
Can you imagine a country made up of more than 7,000 islands? That country exists in the Pacific Ocean, east of mainland Asia. It is the Philippines, a land famous for its natural beauty, variety of wildlife, and pleasanttropicalweather. Taken together, its islands cover an area just a bit smaller than the United Kingdom and Ireland.
As an island nation, the Philippines has no land borders with any other countries. Its closest neighbours are Malaysia (to the southwest), Indonesia (to the south), and China and Taiwan (to the north). The Philippines is part of a region called Southeast Asia.
An island people The people of the Philippines, calledFilipinos, live on fewer than half of the islands that make up their nation. Most of the islands cover less than 2.6 square kilometres (1 square mile). Many islands don’t even have names. The largest island is Luzon. Manila, the nation’s capital, is located there. To the south is the large island of Mindanao. In between is a group of smaller islands called the Visayas.
Different backgrounds, one nation The Philippines today is a blend of several distinctcultures. The first settlers wereMalay. Spain then controlled the islands for several hundred years. The United States ruled the Philippines for a time, as did Japan during World War II. The Filipinos were finally granted their independence in 1946. Filipinos reflect these different influences. Many have Southeast Asian roots, Spanish names, and speak English. But at heart, the people know they are a distinct nation, and they are proud to be Filipino.
