Introducing Japan
What do you picture when you think of Japan? Is it amazing bullet trains and the neon lights of Tokyo? Or perhaps you picture sushi and karaoke? The ancient island nation of Japan is all of those things, but it is also much more.
Japan is made up of hundreds of islands, but has four main, large islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. This land of the mightysamuraiand snow-capped Mount Fuji is used to challenges, both man-made and natural.
Japan faced its greatest test yet when the most powerful earthquake in its recorded history struck off the east coast, near Sendai, on 11 March 2011. The earthquake triggered a devastatingtsunami, which is a giant ocean wave that can come up far on to land. The earthquake and tsunami caused thousands of deaths and billions of pounds in damage.
Road to recovery The disaster created another major concern when the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was damaged. International teams fought bravely to prevent a major disaster and the spread of harmfulradiation. Japan knows about the harmful effects of nuclear radiation. It is the only country in history to have suffered the attack of a nuclear bomb, at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, before its defeat in World War II (1939–1945).
Since World War II, Japan has worked to become the third-largestindustrialpower of the world, and a nation known for cutting-edge technologies. It has kept its ancient, unique sense ofcultureand honour, even while becoming a modern nation.
How to say... In Japan you might hearkonnichiwawhen welcomed, which means “hello” or “good afternoon”. The Japanese saymoshi moshias “hello” when using the telephone.
