Introducing Italy
What comes to mind when you think of Italy? Food such as pizza, pasta, and ice cream? Football? Fashion? Family? Or artists such as Michelangelo? Italy is famous for all these things and more. Italy is a country in southern Europe that is recognizable because it looks like a high-heeled boot. It is apeninsula. A peninsula is a long, thin stretch of land that sticks out into the sea. Italy lies in the Mediterranean Sea. Italy is about the same size as the British Isles.
Daily life Shake hands once and saybuongiorno(good day) when you first meet an Italian. You can also ask come stai?(how are you?). You should shake hands again when you say goodbye. You shouldn’t use the greetingciao(pronounced "chow") unless you know the person.
Population and language About 60 million people live in Italy. The national language is Italian. Italian is a Romance language. It is called this because it is based on Latin, a very old language that the Romans spoke nearly 3,000 years ago.
Repubblica Italianais the proper name for Italy in the Italian language. Italians also call their countryBelpaese, which means "beautiful country".
Only recently single Italy has only been aunified(single) country since 1871. Before that, it was a collection ofstatesor regions that often fought each other and other countries. The fact that these regions were separate for so long is probably why there are still big differences inculture, food, and lifestyle throughout Italy.
