Introducing India
What images come to your mind when someone mentions the wordIndia? You may imagine streets packed with women dressed in brightly coloured saris. You may think ofturbansor elephants. You will certainly find these in India. But you will find much more as well.
Changing India There are more poor people in India than in the 26 poorest African countries put together. But India is also one of the fastest-developing countries in the world. As it grows richer, India will likely become more powerful and influential.
India has a population of more than one billion people. Many of them have becomemiddle classin the past 20 years. It is estimated that there are now about 200 million people in India’s middle class. They are able to buy cars, furniture, and clothes. But for most Indians, particularly those who live in small villages in the countryside, life has changed little in recent years. They are still very poor.
Modern cities The main changes have happened in India’s cities, where 30 per cent of the people live. In the cities, there are grand, modern hotels, air-conditioned shopping centres, and some of the best restaurants in the world. People in India’s cities have lifestyles similar to those of people in many wealthy countries.
How to say... The nameIndiacomes from the Indus River. The Hindi word for India isBharat. BothIndiaandBharatare official names for India.
