IntroductIon
A crane operator sits in a small glass cabin 100 metres above the city. The people below look smaller than ants. The operator moves control levers and the crane lifts a large concrete panel. As the panel rises, the wind catches it and it begins to swing. The operator quickly adjusts the controls. The panel stops swinging. The operator lowers it carefully on to the top of the growing skyscraper.
When you are building a skyscraper, crane operators are important people. They lift all the materials into place. Architects are important, too. They design the building and decide how it should look. But the people who really matter are the engineers. They make sure that the building stays up. Tower cranes work on the Oakland Bay Bridge in San Francisco, USA.
