“A ll human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”
Those words begin the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, signed
by the members of the United Nations
in 1948. But words alone do not make
people free and equal.
Throughout history, the fight for
justice and equality has been carried
on by brave women all over the world.
Their stories remind us to use our minds,
voices, talents and resources to fight
for freedom and equality for everyone,
every day.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was drafted by representatives of countries from around the world, including the UK, USA, France, China and Australia. Of the nine representatives, only one was a woman: Eleanor Roosevelt. Roosevelt was a former first lady (wife of a US president), and the representative of the United States.
4
Eleanor Roosevelt (see page 9) said her role as the United States’ re presentative in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was her greatest achievement. 5
