In this book, we’re going to talk about fun questions and answers concerning the elements, acid-base reactions, and metals. So, let’s get right to it!

Question: What is an element?
Answer: An element is a substance. It doesn’t break down when it’s in a chemical reaction with another substance, but instead it retains its properties. The atoms that compose an element are all the same type.

gold

For example, the element of gold only has gold atoms. Sometimes the atoms of a particular element structure themselves as molecules instead of single atoms.

For example, the element argon exists as single atoms, but the element nitrogen exists as molecules, each with two nitrogen atoms. Many of the elements, over 90, in the periodic table are found in natural environments on Earth. Scientists have produced the others in laboratory settings. Some elements are very rare and don’t last long because they aren’t stable. They are radioactive and quickly decompose.
