Introduction
I have prepared this book in responseto complaints voiced by a large number of Arab IELTS and TOEFL candidates. This book provides interested students with ways of approaching both tests in such a way that they can improve and develop their language skills , thus removing obstacles and planting a sense of self- confidence .  The book contains grammatical information without which no sound communication can take place. It shows people how the English sentence is formed stressing the pivotal role of verbs, adjectives, adverbs and nouns. The book also shows candidates how to write an essay, giving some useful expressions that can be made use of when dealing with a variety of topics. Students will find compositions covering several subjects. Students are advised to borrow the language used in these compositions, which will help them develop not only their writing skill, but also other skills.  I catch this opportunity to convey my gratitude to Mr. Rogger Manner who encouraged me to prepare such a book , and whose recommendations and advice made the birth of this book possible. I would like also to dedicate this book to my caring wife , whose ceaseless support brought this book into light.  I hope that IELTS and TOEFL candidates will benefit from this book urging interested people to provide me with their impressions of it.

What is the IELTS ?
It is a test of English language proficiency. It is jointly managed by University of Cambridge, the British Council and IDP Australia, and was established in 1989. An IELTS result is valid for two years. It tests the ability to listen, read, write and speak in English. (Expert User). The scores range from 1 (non User)to 9 This test is designed to make sure that the candidate canmanipulate ﺪﺨﺘﺴﻳ perfectly the basic language skills..listening, reading, writing and speaking. We use language to communicate with others.Your commandof the language enables you to be a successful communicator. Language is a medium of communication; it is through language that we can express our feelings, ideas, opinions and reactions andconveyﺎﻬﻠﺻﻮﻧ them to others. We tend to use perfect language to let others understand us well, thus avoiding any misunderstanding. This makes it necessary to learn the languageadequatelyﻢﻴﻠﺳ ﻞﻜﺸﺑ. How can a candidate approach the test ? on vocabulary. WordsWhile learning the language, you should place emphasis constitute bricks that are basic to any language structure. You learn a word to use it. To successfully use a word, you should know what part of speech it is. Is it a noun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb or a preposition? A wordacquiresﺐﺴﺘﻜﺗ its meaning from its place in the sentence. This makes it easy for you to guess the meaning of a word fromcontext قﺎﻴﺴﻟا. An English word can have a variety
4
of meanings. It is highly important topossess ﻚﻠﺘ a reasonable amount of words. To increase the number of words, you should know the base of a word and thederivativesتﺎﻘﺘﺸﳌا it begets. Your knowledge of grammar makes it easy for you to communicate efficiently; you should know how the English sentence is formed. English grammar shows you how to build a sentence. Grammar plays a vital role in the communication process, so you should try to learn English grammar. Grammatical mistakes hinder communication, thus creating a state of confusion and disappointment on the part of the people involved. An English sentence should have a verb; the verb is the backbone of the English sentence. The verb can convey most of the meaning of the sentence. If you know the meaning of the verb, it becomes easy for you to guess the meanings of the other components of the sentence. You can't make a meaningful sentence without a verb, so it is vitally important to know as many verbs as possible. You learn a verb with its conjugations and must be able to properly use them. You need both vocabulary and grammar because they are essential to all the language skills. It is impossible to possess real language skills without vocabulary and grammar. Vocabulary plays a key role in attaining a language; the more vocabulary one possesses, the better. One should be keen to learn as many words as possible. It is important that you pronounce a word correctly; sound pronunciation makes it easy for you to learn, recall and retain it for future uses. One of the best ways to increase the amount of vocabulary is to know the words that can be derived from the base word. Take the word 'differ' for instance. 'Differ' is the base word from
5
which other words are derived. One should know how a word is modified to show its grammatical function. The word 'differ' can be inflected in many ways; we get ' differs, differed, differing, difference, different, and differently'. One should know the grammatical function of each inflection (form). ' Differ' is a verb that can be used in a sentence expressing a fact. You can produce sentences like: 'I differ with you.', 'Ali differs from you.', ' They differed with me, so I had to withdrew.', 'They have differed over your proposal.', 'They are differing with you.'. The word 'difference' is a noun that can be used to make sentences like ' We notice a big difference.', ' We have to overcome our differences.' ' Class differences endanger a country's stability.' The word 'different' is an adjective that is used to produce sentences like ' You are different from your father." , ' Different people have different opinions.' The word ' differently' is an adverb that is used to modify a verb as in this sentence: ' You are doing things differently.'
We tend to listen, read, write and speak focusing on meaning. When we are engaged in any language activity, we are keen either to convey certain ideas or feelings to others, or to get ready to receive theirs. We listen to others to get to know what they want. Our response is based on our understanding of what we hear. We read a book, a letter, a newspaper and others to get information. We write to others to communicate our ideas or feelings to them so that we receive their responses. We also seek to understand others through speaking to them. In all these cases, we encounter obstacles that may spoil the communication process. To overcome these obstacles, one should consider the
6
atmosphere in which the language is being used. Of course, we suppose that the user has satisfactory skills. To successfully deal with this test, one should be fully prepared for it. You should be equipped with all the language skills in order to do the test satisfactorily. You should come with a feeling of self- confidence. Feel relaxed and don't feel worried. The test is a challenge, but you should show determination that you can deal with this challenge. Don't let any difficulty shake this determination. Don't spend too much time dealing with a difficulty. Time is too limited and too short, which requires you to act quickly without allowing anxiety to control you. The test components : The reading section:  This sectionconstitutes ﻞﻜﺸﻳ the biggestchallengeيﺪﺤﺗ faced by candidates. It is not an easy task to perform because it requires excellent reading skills and a perfect knowledge of reading strategies with which the majority of Arab candidates are not familiar. The reading text is too long and contains too many difficult words. It also deals with very serious subjects that need concentration, peace of mindلﺎﺒﻟا ءوﺪﻫ andanalytical powersﻞﻴﻠﺤﺘﻟا ﲆﻋ تارﺪﻗ. And the time allocated is too short for these long reading passages. You should bear this point in mind, but the important thing is that it should notdemoralizeﻚﻄﺒﺜﻳ you. Face the situation with courage. In spite of the obstaclesﻢﻏﺮﻟا ﲆﻋ, ﻦﻣ تﺎﺒﻘﻌﻟاone can deal with this section if the following strategy if followed. First, pay attention to titles, headlines and sub-headlines. They give you a
7
rough idea of the subject contained in the passage. Second, one should rely on their general knowledge because it may help them understand the subject better. Third, read the questions before you get involved in the reading process. You should carefully read each question so that you can provide the answer requested. It is generally said that your understanding of a question constitutes a half of the answer. This move, together with the above attempts, allows you a better understanding of the subject. Fourth, the reading passage consists of a number of paragraphs, each of which deals with a certain side of the general topic. Try to read the first paragraph and find out the topic sentence which contains the main idea. As you go on reading, you pick up more ideas. As your readingprogresses ّﺪﻘﺘﺗ, your understanding becomes better. This will place you in a position to answer correctly. When reading a passage,it is detrimental to insist onنأ رﴬﻟا ﻦﻣ ﴫﺗ ﲆﻋknowing the meaning of every single word. That will waste your time. In case you come across a difficult word, try to guess its meaning from the context, but don't spend too much time trying to guess the meaning of a difficult word. The more you read, theReading is a skill acquired through constant practice. more you know about language. It is through reading that you gain more information on a variety of topics thatinterest ﻢﻬـﺗ people. It is through reading that you come to know how others feel and think and how they use language to express their feelings and ideas. People express ideas that they are willing to show others so that both can reacha common ground of understanding. ﻢﻫﺎﻔﺘﻟا ﻦﻣ ﺔﻛﱰﺸﻣ ﻪﻴﺿرأ
