Reading the book 1. Discuss the titleLittle Zebra. Ask:What do you think this book might be about? 2. Discuss the cover illustration. Ask:Where do you think this book might be set? In a zoo? In the jungle?Look through the book and talk about the pictures before you start reading. Note the different settings. 3. Read the first two pages to the child, pointing at the words as you read. 4. Ask the child to read the words on the following pages. If they get stuck, wait for a few seconds to see if they can work it out. If they find it a problem, tell them the sound the first letter makes. Finally, give them the word and ask them to read the whole sentence again. Praise the child! 5. As the child reads the book, encourage them to point to each word with their finger and practise reading from left to right. Tell the child to emphasize the words in bold print (not, is).
