Reading the book 1. Discuss the titleLet’s Make a Boat. Ask:Do you think this book will be a story or a non-fiction book? 2. Look through the book and talk about the pictures before you start reading. Ask:TimWhy do you think wanted to make a wooden boat? 3. Read the first two pages to the child, pointing at the words as you read. Encourage the child to pause at full stops. 4. Ask the child to read the words on the following pages. If they get stuck, wait for a few seconds to see if they can work it out. If they find it a problem, tell them the phonemes the letters make (e.g. b-oa-t) and ask them to blend the sounds together. If they still find it difficult, tell them the word and ask them to read the whole sentence again. Praise the child! 5. As the child reads the book, encourage them to point to each word with their finger and practise reading from left to right.
