Reading the book 1. Discuss the titleLazy Old Pirates. Look at the cover. Ask:How do you know these pirates are lazy?2. Look through the book and talk about the pictures before you start reading. Ask:What happens if you are made to walk the plank? 3. Read the first two pages to the child, pointing at the words as you read. 4. Ask the child to read the words on the following pages. If they get stuck, wait for a few seconds to see if they can work it out. If they find it a problem, sound out the phonemes in the word (e.g. c-ou-d) and ask them to blend them together. If they still find it difficult, tell them the word and ask them to read the whole sentence again. Praise the child! 5. As the child reads the book, encourage them to point to each word with their finger and practise reading from left to right. Encourage the child to emphasize words written in capital letters and italics.
