The third and final book in a clear and concise introduction to Latin designed to steadily lead students through a series of illustrative examples, readings, vocabulary lists and translation exercises.

This book is the third of a complete three-volume course, written with the aim of making the basics of the Latin language as easy and accessible as possible to beginners, regardless of their age. Throughout, the author presents the language alongside insights into the culture and civilization of Ancient Rome, using numerous full colour photographs and original drawings to make the introduction to language deliberately gradual and visually stimulating in order to engage students and allow them to relate to the subject matter. There is no continuous story in Latin, but plenty of linguistic exercises which will give students sufficient practice in emphasizing the basic points, allowing them time to gain confidence in understanding one new lesson before moving on to the next. Vocabulary is introduced at regular intervals, and the books include numerous challenging and interesting exercises, designed to be of manageable length so as to be less imposing and easier to learn.

In the previous book you learnt three tenses; thePresent, theIm perfectand theFuture. These three tenses are formed from the Present stemof verbs,

e.g.

ama= videA reg audEE capi

In this and the next two chapters you will learn three more tenses, which are formed from thePerfect stemof verbs. Perfect stems are not as predictable as the Present stems, and do not always conform to the four different conjugations.

Many, but not all, verbs likeamoandaudioadd avto form their Perfect stem; other verbs add ans, and some change the vowel of the verb’s Present stem – you can see these variations in the Perfect stems of the five verbs above:

The first tense for you to learn is thePerfect. This tense in Latin is the equivalent oftwotenses in English, one which we call thePast, describing a single action in past time (e.g. I loved, I saw, etc,) and the other which we sometimes call theTrue Perfect, describing an action which has happened in the past but which still has a result in the present (e.g. I have loved, I have seen, etc.)
