Reading the book 1. Discuss the titleI am in the park. Ask:What do you think this book might be about? To help, you could tell the child that the boy in this book is called Carlos, and he is often with his Gran. 2. Discuss the cover illustration. Ask:What is Carlos doing? Do you think he is having fun? How can you tell? 3. Read the first two pages to the child, pointing at the words as you read. Encourage the child to read with expression. 4. Ask the child to read the words on the following pages. If they get stuck, wait for a few seconds to see if they can work it out. If they find it a problem, tell them the sound the first letter makes. Finally give them the word and ask them to read the whole sentence again. Praise the child! 5. As the child reads the book, encourage them to point to each word with their finger and practise reading from left to right.
