Subject and Predicate Thesubjectof the simple sentence tells youwhoorwhatthis sentence is about. The subject can be anoun, a pronoun or a phrase. Thepredicateis the part of the simple sentence thatmakes a comment about the subjectand will always contain theverbof the sentence. Some simple sentencesdo not have a subject, but consist only of a predicate. Ask the following questions to determine which part of the sentence is the subject and which part is the predicate: 1.Subject- Who or what is this simple sentence about? (Remember the subject can be one word or a phrase.) 2.Predicate(The predicate is usually a phrase.)- What is the subject doing? Example: Spiffy the dog is chasing the ball. Who is this sentence about?“Spiffy the dog” What is the subject doing?“is chasing the ball” Subject:the dog Spiffy Predicate: is chasing the ball (the verb is part of the predicate) Question 1:Find thesubjectandpredicatein each of the following sentences: 1.1 Harry is in trouble at school.
