Subtraction

Vertical Subtraction
When we subtract numbers using a vertical method we can either subtract them by:
1) expanding the numbers first and working with thenumber/numerical valueof each digit or by
2) subtracting numbers using theplace valueof each digit.

1) Verticalsubtraction using expanded notation (working with thenumber/numerical valueof each
digit)
Even though we aresubtracting, when
a number is written in expanded
Eg:3 2 4 – 2 1 3notation, itMUSThave‘+’signs in

Thousands/Hundreds/Tens/Units. This

Starting in the units column,

each digit.

10 0 + 1 0 + 1
It is also very important that the
=1 1 1answer reflects the ‘+’ signs in order to
get the correct answer when writing it
into contracted notation.
The next example is of vertical subtraction using expanded

notation where you need toBORROWfrom other columns.

Eg:4 5 6 - 1 6 9

Now work with 140 - 60
You are left with 40
Now work with 16 - 9
140
Take the 10 you
You are left with 300
borrowed and add it to
300 1 0 0 + 40 16
the unit that is there

2-+ 61 0 00 +9

You a r e w orking withIf youcan I take 9 away from it?Ask yourself, if Iwith 40 – 60.

If can’t,then you need to go to the300 – 100.have 40, can I take 60 away.
you can’t then you need to go toTens column andBORROW10.
Take the 10 that you borrowedthe Hundreds column and
BORROW100. Taketo the Units column and add it tothe 100 you
borrowed and add it to the 40 inthe 6.You are now working with
the Tens column.You are now16 – 9.
= 2 8 7
