South Africa’s fresh water resources will be exhausted by 2030, unless we make an effort to use water more responsibly, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) warns in a recent report. We have to start thinking differently about water and treat it as a resource that must be protected. An arid land South Africa is an arid or very dry land and we have very little fresh water to our disposal. Annual rainfall of about 500 mm is regarded as the least that is required for successful farming. This is the rainfall for 65% of South Africa, while 21% of the country gets less than 200 mm a year. Erratic rainfall patterns make the problem worse – some parts of the country often get no rain. Excessive evaporation also contributes to water-shortage. Why is clean water so important? Seventy percent of Earth’s surface is covered with water, but only three percent of this water is fresh and only one percent is found in rivers and lakes. Humans rely on this small supply of fresh water for drinking, bathing, washing and many other uses. In South Africa it is vital that we treat our water resources like gold. The western regions of the country are particularly arid. The population is also increasing with more people needing more water. If we contaminate our water resources, there will eventually not be enough clean water for everyone. Rivers are important for many reasons. Farmers are dependent on rivers to irrigate their land. They use additional water sources by drilling boreholes, erecting windmills and buildings dams. Rivers should not only have enough water, but also a healthy ecosystem.
