st English 1 Language Grade 4 Comprehension: Wild Animals Read the following, then answer the questions that follow:
South Africa’s Big FiveLions Lions are animals that live in prides. Although lionesses do most of the hunting, males always feed first. Small baby lions are called cubs. Leopard The leopard is an animal that likes to be on its own. It spends most of its day in hiding. It hunts at night, and lives in thick bush, forests or rocky areas. Elephant Elephants also live together. Mature elephant bulls form groups that walk alone. They communicate over many kilometres using sounds that humans can’t hear. Elephants are generally peaceful animals, but bulls can be more aggressive. Rhinoceros White Rhinos are larger and have square lips, to make grazing easier. The calf always walks in front of the mother. Black Rhinos have hook lips used for finding food in thick bushes and the calf always follows behind the mother. Rhinos are an endangered species. Buffalo Buffalo live in herds of up to 500. They are hot-tempered and bulls can charge without warning. Buffalo kill more than 200 people a year in Africa.
