TYPES OF VERBS Finite VerbsA finite verb can stand on its own and does not need an auxiliary verb. A finite verb must have asubject,number(singular or plural) andtense. oTogether with thesubject, it makes complete sense. Example:Helaughs.Theylaughed.Iwill laugh. oIt indicatesnumber.Example: Theboy(singular) laughs. Thegirls(plural) laugh. oIt hastense. Example:Todaythe boylaughs.Yesterdaythe girlslaughed.Tomorrowthey will laugh. Infinite verbsWhen a verb is preceded byto, it is known as the infinitive. The infinite verb cannot stand on its own; it must be preceded by afinite verb. Example: The boywantstopaint; The girlsstarttolaugh; Theytriedtojump.
