10 Ways to search the Internet for information
Grade 6
Inour era ofadvanced technology and high-speed Internet connections, you can find information onvirtually anything. Inthe space ofjust afew minutes, wecan find recipes for the tastiest pie orlearn all about the theory ofwave-particle duality. But more often than not, wehave tosift through avast body ofknowledge toget the information weneed, and this can take hours rather than minutes. Below is alist ofthe most effective methods for searching Google tohelp you find the material you’re looking for injust acouple ofclicks. 1. Either this orthat Sometimes we’re not sure that we’ve correctly remembered the information orthe name weneed, tostart our search. But this doesn’t have tobeaproblem! Simply put inafew potential variations ofwhat you’re looking for, and separate them bytyping the “|“ symbol. Instead ofthis symbol you can also use ”or." Then it’s easy enough tochoose the result that makes the most sense. 2. Searching using synonyms Our language isrich insynonyms. Sometimes this can bevery convenient when doing research online. Ifyou need tofind websites onagiven subject rather than those that include aspecific phrase, add the "~" symbol toyour search. For example, ifyou search for the term "healthy ~food" you’ll get results about the principles ofhealthy eating, cooking recipes, aswell ashealthy dining options. 3. Searching within websites Sometimes you read aninteresting article onawebsite and find yourself subsequently wanting toshare itwith your friends orsimply rereadit. The easiest way tofind the desired piece ofinformation again istosearch within the website. Todothis, type the address ofthe site, then akey word orentire phrase from the article, and itshould come upimmediately. For example: “supersport.co.za superrugby” 4. The power ofthe asterisk When our cunning memory decides topreventus from recalling that one key word, phrase, ornumber weneed inorder tofind what we’re looking for, you can turn tothe powerful "*" symbol. Just use this inthe place ofthe word/phrase you can’t remember, and you should beable tofind the results you’re looking for. For example: “22.11.*”
