A comprehensive treatise on how to understand complex language, and use language effectively as a behavior analyst.

Language changes everything. From infancy through adulthood, language shapes how we live our lives and interact with other people, in increasingly complex ways. Language also shapes how we exist in the world as professionals—and how we operate as a profession. As behavior analysts working with others to effect change, words matter.

A comprehensive understanding of complex language is therefore critical to practicing effectively as a behavior analyst. Understanding the functions of complex language, allows us to skillfully use language as an intervention tool.

Relational frame theory (RFT) is a behavior analytic theory of human language. RFT suggests that the building block of human language and higher cognition is relating—in other words, the human ability to create links between one thing and another using words. Understanding and Applying Relational Frame Theory outlines the essential principles of RFT, and offers practical applications and tools to help clients live better lives and to establish the conditions necessary for all of us to thrive. With a central focus on establishing psychological flexibility, prosociality, and cooperative contexts for change, at all levels of analysis—from the self to overarching systems and cultures—in this book, you will:

  • Learn the theoretical basis of RFT, including how relational operants are learned, from their roots in early social interactions to the complex relating of relations and relational networks seen in analogical and metaphorical reasoning.
  • Explore how complex verbal repertoires affect individual behavior, introducing the development of the self and the influence of rule-governed behavior and private events.
  • Examine relational framing in the context of groups—including the speaking and listening skills needed for supervision, mentorship, effective messaging, and prosociality within and between organizational systems.
  • Discover the implications of applying a behavior analytic understanding of complex language to a variety of settings, including education, mental health, and business.
  • Learn how RFT can be applied to issues of diversity and inclusion, and global sustainability.

Finally, you’ll find a thorough discussion of how behavior analysts can use the principles outlined in this book to extend the reach of the field into a range of socially significant and critical areas for behavior change.

SIRI MING, PHD, BCBA-D EVELYN GOULD, PHD, BCBA-DJULIA H. FIEBIG, PHD, BCBA-D
“Words matter. The authors help us understand why and how language is important to human evolution. They do so by showing us the possibilities offered by relational frame theory (RFT). Ming, Gould, and Fiebig present clear conceptualizations and examples to illustrate the advan-tages of a functional and contextual approach to influencing the world around us. Above all, they teach us ways to accompany one another in the quest for collective well-being.”
Shahla Alai-Rosales, associate professor at the University of North Texas, and coauthorof Responsible and Responsive Parenting in Autism and Building and Sustaining Meaningful Relationships
“Not only does this book explore the foundations of RFT that are relevant for those involved in applied behavior analysis (ABA) practice, but it explores and applies RFT to some of the most pressing priorities of our time like diversity, equity, inclusion, and sustainability. Desperately needed is a book that explains how scaled-up, cultural-level interventions can affect the future, with a focus on contextual analyses of language and cognition.”
Ruth Anne Rehfeldt, coeditor ofDerived Relational Responding and Applied Behavior Analyses of Language and Cognition, and fellow of the Association for Behavior Analysis International and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science
“This is a comprehensive and updated introduction to RFT, especially suitable for a reader who has a basic understanding of behavior analysis. In addition to this, it is also the first whole-book treatment on RFT which gives the concept of ‘hierarchical framing’ its proper place in under-standing human behavior. It also shows how many commonsense phenomena—like cooperation, compassion, self-compassion, and curiosity—can be conceptualized from an RFT perspective. Excellent!”
Niklas Törneke, MD, author ofLearning RFTandMetaphor in Practice
Understanding and Applying Relational Frame Theoryis a must-read. It presents readers with quality content in a very didactic format, with exercises that lead readers to a better understand-ing of the contents, while following their values. If you are interested in learning RFT, this is defi-nitely a book I recommend.”
Táhcita Mizael, PhD, postdoctoral researcher at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, and coeditor ofDebates on Feminism and Behavior Analysis
“An important book and a must-read for those wanting to learn to ‘see’ language. You’ll follow its journey at theoretical, developmental, technical, and applied levels. If you have ever wanted to learn why it is that speaking a value can transform a life, sometimes in an instant, this is the book. A thorough text that would suit students, teachers, and professionals. I hope it becomes a text for every language and behavior syllabus.”
Louise Hayes, PhD, author ofWhat Makes You StrongerandYour Life Your Way; developer of DNA-V; clinical psychologist; and adjunct senior research fellow at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia
“This is the book I have been waiting for—one that bridges the basic science of RFT from func-tional analysis to social justice, all in plain language. Practice implications, exercises, and personal disclosure on the part of the authors deconstruct complex ideas into felt functions that graduate students or advanced practitioners alike will benefit from. I look forward to the opportunity to adopt this text for graduate courses in behavior therapy.”
Matthew D. Skinta, PhD, ABPP, assistant professor of psychology at Roosevelt University, and author ofContextual Behavior Therapy for Sexual and Gender Minority Clients
“A thoroughly written text that invites readers toward a more complete understanding of RFT and its application. The written information provided in this text is supplemented with infographics throughout which serve to create accessibility to the information for those just learning about RFT, and expansion of knowledge for those more familiar with the topic. The authors have power-fully set the occasion for readers not only to read, but also experience RFT.”
Nasiah Cirincione-Ulezi, EdD, BCBA, academic faculty director at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Capella University
“Writing about the functional vision is a challenge because, as any behavior, the act of under-standing is brought to the present according to the individual history of interlocking contingen-cies. It is an act into a whole context, influenced by it and influencing it. Analyzing the complex functions, mostly in verbal humans, is a difficult endeavor. This book connects the dots in a cre-ative, comprehensive, and didactic way. A present to learn and enjoy.”
Carmen Luciano, PhD, professor of psychology and chair of the master’s program at University Almeria, and director of specialized training at the Madrid Institute of Contextual Psychology (MICPSY)

Epilogue
Prologue
It has taken us a long time to write this book—and we don’t just mean in hours and days. It has taken our histories to get us here. It is the outcome of our learning and lived experience thus far, part of which includes our experience as behavior analysts. At this time, we have collectively spent 137 years on this planet, including seventy-five learning about and practicing behavior analysis. We present this context because we believe that context is everything when it comes to understanding behavior. Everything in this book has been shaped by our contexts—whether the more immediate context of writing each of these chapters (during a pandemic, as you will see in many of our exam-ples) or the historical, social, and cultural contexts that have shaped our careers and our thinking about language and behavior analysis. Our paths and our thinking have also been shaped by the influences of many mentors, colleagues, authors, the community of behavior analysts, loved ones and friends, and others who have also had a significant, nurturing influence for us. We’d like to take a moment to acknowledge some of those people who have supported our work, provided us with feedback, and shaped our thinking. We began writing this book standing on the shoulders of giants, within and outside of behavior analysis (some of whom are referenced or quoted within this book)—people who were directly and indirectly involved in our education, growth, and ongoing practice. These communities and learning histories have shaped our values and motivations for writing this book. In many ways, this is the book we wish we had had as early career behavior analysts as well as when we set out later to understand and apply relational frame theory. We each arrived at our shared work on this text with different educational backgrounds and work and life experiences, giving us different perspectives on language as behavior and how to analyze it. Writing this book was a journey of integrating all of our perspectives in service of shared values with respect for the dissemination of behavior science, contributing to the health of the field, and working toward social and environmental justice. Meaningful collaboration on any project requires creating a cooperative context that supports vulnerability as well as possibility. We couldn’t write this book without deeply trusting each other, staying humble, and being willing to look at all possible angles, even if that meant our original idea was wrong (or at least not that great!). Challenge comes before change and growth. On that note, we are grateful and offer thanks to our colleagues who provided heartfelt, honest, and extensive feedback on early drafts: Priscilla Almada, Luisa Cañón, John McElwee, Leslie Morrison, Emily Sandoz, and Ian Stewart. Learning RFT might be challenging—most journeys that matter bring some difficulty. But it will also be fun, interesting, and worth it, if you let it. Just by opening up this book and reading this far, you’ve already engaged your curiosity, in spite of any discomfort you may feel about not being fluent in RFT (or perhaps even behavior analysis). In doing so, you’re already demonstrating at least one of the behavioral cusps for growing and expanding repertoires that can transform your practice as a behavior analyst!

Understanding and Applying Relational Frame Theory
We’re privileged to now be able to guide you for at least part of your journey in learning RFT. We hope it’s made easier and more meaningful through the stories and invitations within. Language lies at the root of what it means to be human and the limitless possibilities that come with that. As you’ll see, this book is personal for us, and we hope that it becomes personal for you. We’re honored you’ve joined us.
Overview
CHAPTER 1
Frame by Frame
Behavior analysts have always been deeply committed to applying our science to the full range of real-world human problems. We introduce the framework of this book by arguing (as behavior ana-lysts working with others to effect change) that words matter; we need to understand the functions of complex language (our own and that of others) and be able to skillfully use language as an inter-vention tool. We must be prepared to understand—and influence—complex behavior at every level, from interlocking contingencies between speakers and listeners at the individual level to the multilevel contingencies across the groups and systems within which we work and that affect our clients, as well as the cultures that shape us all. To do so requires a complete understanding of language as verbal behavior. In this introductory chapter, we describe how understanding RFT allows us to approach complex human behavior, relations, and problems with precision and rigor. Functional contextualism provides the grounding philosophical framework we will adhere to, so we discuss this framework and how that choice influences our account. A functional contextual-ist perspective requires that we identify the purpose of any analysis—what it means for an analysis to “successfully work.” We argue that for behavior analysts, an analysis “works” when it allows for prediction and influence of behaviorand results insocially significant change. In particular, we view increasing psychological flexibility, cooperation, prosociality, the sustainable use of resources, and diversity, equity, and inclusion as the ultimate aim of all of our analyses. Throughout this book, you will be invited to explore and immediately apply what you are learning, first at the level of the self and then to the individuals, groups, and systems that surround you. Within that context, we conclude this chapter with a framework for conducting multilevel case conceptualizations and functional analyses, to which we will return at the end of each of the four parts this book of with examples and exercises.
