A genderrevolution– and reaction
he school was in lockdown. T Pupils huddled in secured changing rooms, practising how to keep safe if someone with a gun entered the school. These practices are called active shooter drills. Boys huddled in the boys’ changing room. Girls huddled in the girls’ changing room. One pupil was left to stand in the corridor, alone. The teachers at the Stafford County School, Virginia, USA, didn’t know which changing room the pupil should go to. The pupil was transgender. And because the school didn’t have clear guidelines about where she belonged, the pupil was sent to stand in the corridor by herself. “If there was someone armed,” she told a local newspaper, “I would’ve been the first one gone.” This event was a drill, not an actual shooting.

The separation of a transgender pupil from other pupils during an active shooter drill led a large group of supporters to attend a school board meeting to protest against the school’s actions.
But the fact remains: a transgender pupil was left in a corridor by herself because the school had not made it clear that her right to safety was as important as every other pupil’s. Across the world, conflicts over the rights of transgender people are taking place in businesses, schools, hospitals and government departments. Newspapers are full of headlines like these:
