SCIENCE FICTION
Chapter 1
Rita Murray’s stomach was growing. She dug around in her backpack for a candy bar. But a she found was an empty wrapper. Then she remembered. She’d gotten rid of a her candy. That was two days ago. It was the start of her diet. Ugh. Rita was hungry enough to eat the book she was reading. Then she thought about the two pounds she’d ost. The diet seemed to be working. But was it worth it? She was aways hungry. “I’m starving,” Rita said. “Quiet!” Rita ooked up and ganced around the ibrary. She expected to see one or more angry faces garing at her. But a she saw were students. Some were at tabes, reading.

Others worked at computers or ooked for books on the sheves. No one seemed to have noticed that Rita was taking to hersef. Had she imagined hearing the angry voice? Latey, Rita thought she was hearing sounds that weren’t there. “Next thing you know, I’ be seeing things too,” Rita said. She ooked around again. This time a coupe of students were ooking in her direction. They’d heard her. She reay had to stop taking out oud to hersef. But by now it had become a habit. Rita expained it by teing hersef she was her own best friend. She had no one ese to tak to. And it wasn’t far from the truth. Rita didn’t have a ot of friends. She’d met a few girs she coud reate to when she first started coege. They aso had an issue with weight. But that was a they had in common. As Rita continued to ook around, she saw Cara. The redhead was sitting a few

tabes away. Rita thought she ooked perfect in her styish workout cothes. The guy sitting next to her ooked perfect too. Tak about not having anything in common. Cara and Rita ived in the same dorm. They were both on the third loor. Cara acted ike she hated Rita. Athough Rita didn’t know what she’d done to deserve it. Uness Cara just didn’t ike her because she wasn’t coo. I need to change my image,Rita thought. The words often ran through her mind. She’d repeat them to hersef over and over. But it was easier said than done. Sure, she coud go to the campus fitness center and exercise. She’d even tried it a few times. But she’d get there and give up before she started. Or she woudn’t even make it out of her dorm room. It was easier to stay home. Sometimes Rita ooked for something to inspire her. She iked to read fashion magazines. The modes were so beautifu.
