In 1831 the Lightfoot family moved to a new house, near the village church. That first Sunday in church, they heard the story of the knight Sir Edward d'Estur, who went off to fight in the crusades, hundreds of years earlier. From that moment, Lucy was captivated, visiting the church often and returning happy, with her eyes shining. So begins a romantic ghost story, linking the past and the present across five hundred years. This historical love story brings together both the past and a wonderful romance, in a warm and uplifting way. As part of the Promises series, this book is ideal for girls who are reluctant readers but want access to books with themes of their age range.

We moved to Gatcombe in April 1831. Papa’s work brought us here, but our family came from the area years ago. So in a way it was a coming home. The locals say there have been

Lightfoots here for hundreds of years.
Mamma was pleased with the house. It is a large cottage, with the sweetest pretty garden, and it’s right by the church, so we don’t have far to go on Sundays. But if she had known what was to come, Mamma would not have been so happy about that.
