Foreword
Being a teenager is hard. This isn’t exactly earth-shattering news. I’m guessing you could write your own book about how challenging being a teenager truly is. Adolescence is a time of great change: physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is the time of life when the most change occurs, second only to infancy.
As a teen, there are many things pulling you in lots of directions. You have your parents asking you for one thing, your friends asking you for something else, and maybe you want something altogether different. With all of this confusion, you may not know what to do, what to say, or how to act. Add into this confusion all of your emotions, and it can feel like a recipe for disaster. The challenge, frequently, is figuring out how to handle it all so you feel empowered and confident, all the while building and maintaining your important relationships.
It is challenging to know what skills to use to be true to yourself and to speak your mind. You may be feeling rifts in your relationships with your friends, family, or other people in your life. If you had the skills to help you communicate and manage your emotions better, your relationships with yourself and others would improve, your ability to navigate the world would be better, and you would begin to feel more confident in yourself and within your life.
Learning how to slow down, take a minute, and determine what you want to do or say effectively and efficiently are the keys to feeling comfortable in your own skin and communicating with ease. When you learn these skills, you will be assertive, confident, and comfortable with yourself.
My excellent colleague Emily Roberts has been working with teens and young adults for over a decade. Many teens she works with see her more as a mentor than a therapist due to her compassionate stance and realistic voice. She understands the challenges faced by teens and has created an innovative, powerful approach to help you achieve your goals and feel your best. This book arrives at an amazing time. It highlights the challenges you face and will teach you how to navigate them confidently and assertively. The skills within this book promote empowerment, understanding, and strength. By incorporating these skills into your daily life, you will feel more confident and self-assured, in control of your emotions, and more comfortable speaking up in any situation.

This book would not have been possible without the love, support, and guidance from my supportive cast and crew who taught me how to be the director of my own life and believed in my dream to inspire and empower girls. We did it.
Mom, Dad, and Sara: You taught me to chase my dreams, even when they led me halfway across the country. You’ve supported my wild ideas and always encouraged me to think for myself. I am beyond grateful to have such a unique upbringing—I know you probably never thought I would say so, but it has helped me feel anything but ordinary. Thank you for your endless supply of love, incense, and supplements.
Nana and Grandma: You ladies have shown me what it means to be a strong woman. I am inspired by your stories and your love.
My New York Cast and Crew
Jen, my role model, mentor, and confidant: You have shown me what a mentor really is, and I aspire to be like you someday; your advice and expertise is invaluable. Without you, I really wouldn’t be here—you trusted my ideas, put up with my procrastination, and pushed me to get out of my comfort zone. You trained me, not just in DBT, but in finding my confidence.
My consultation team: Y’all are amazing—you’ve shown me what collaboration really means! Thank you for your guidance and support. Even on the toughest days, you helped me find the middle path.
Gabby Bernstein, my guru of guidance: You inspired me to spread my message with the world. You believed in my dream and encouraged me to keep writing. You taught me to trust myself, and, finally, to sit still and be guided. I am forever grateful.
Blair and Rebeca, my NYC family: Blair, you’re my soul sister; thank you for manifesting with me and making our lives a reality. Without you, Milo, Max, and Lux, I would have been lost. You showed me that everything really does happen for a reason. I love you! Rebeca, from our dorm room days
