Understanding the Role of Self in Practice: Why the Science Road Matters
Take an odd question seriously, just for a moment: Who are you?
There are so many ways to respond to that question. And it is not as if you can avoid it. If you are interviewing for a job, it will be completely normal for you to be asked to tell the interviewer about yourself, and you will be unlikely to get the job if you cannot answer. If you are on a first date, the question may be tweaked just a bit—“Tell me what you like to do,” perhaps—but the meta-message will be the same, namely, that you should have a well worked-out self-concept that you can readily share with others. A second date will be unlikely unless you can step up to this verbal challenge.
The human community is clear on this. Each of us should have a well-established way of speaking about our history, preferences, reasons for acting, experiences, goals, emotions, self-evaluations, personality, and any of a hundred similar topics and domains. We should know ourselves from top to bottom and be ready, willing, and able to share that information on demand.
Our stories, descriptions, and evaluations are not just used for social communication. They also have an impact on our behavior. People who believe they are worthless may act differently from people who believe they are the greatest. Either self-concept can be a problem—but that is not the point. The point is that our self-concept can make a difference.
The content of our self-descriptions may actually matter less than how we relate to them, and appearances can be deceptive. In some ways, for example, a person who firmly believes he is dumb may be more similar than expected to a person who firmly believes she is smart. “I’m dumb” looks like a description, but it is secretly a comparison: “I’m dumber than others .” “I’m smart” presents itself as a fact, but it can even more powerfully mean, “I’m smarter than others .” These comparisons, then, positive or negative, and our attachment to them, may separate us from others (“I’m better—or worse—than you”) at the very same time that we use them to seek inclusion in the group (“You need me—I’m smart” or “You need to care for me—I’m dumb”).
Self-awareness and consciousness itself extend issues of self into each moment of awareness. As we walk down the hall or open the refrigerator; as we take a shower or shake the hand of a friend, we treat these action patterns as expressions of self, and when we notice them, it seems as if a self knows them. Our ways of being at a party may be different from our ways of being at work, almost as if we had multiple selves competing for our moments.
Who are you?
It’s a powerful question, and you cannot avoid it. Nor can mental and behavioral health practitioners avoid this question as it applies to their clients.
This book examines all the aforementioned expressions of self, and several more, exploring their cognitive and behavioral bases and their practical implications. It provides the range of conceptual tools—based in an extensive scientific research program—that you will need in order to tackle the multi dimensional issues of self-description, personality, self-awareness, perspective taking, and consciousness and bring their related experiences to bear as expressions of understandable combinations of biopsychosocial processes.
When the multiple meanings of the term “self” are more fully understood, and when their underlying principles are revealed, it is easier to think through how issues of self might be dealt with in practice. For example, a rigid self-concept may be due to the ways in which the socioverbal community fosters simplistic, overgeneralized rules abou
