Tony Nicklinson, a healthy middle-aged Englishman, suffers astroke. He is paralyzedfrom the neck down. He loses the ability to speak. He can only communicate by nodding his head, and he cannot feed, bathe, or dress himself. After five years of living in this “locked-in syndrome”, his doctors believe he will never improve significantly. This will be his condition for the rest of his life.
Tony Nicklinson says he wishes doctors had not saved his life. Vincent Humbert is a 22-year-old Frenchman who is injured severely in a car accident. He loses his vision and his ability to speak, and he is paralyzed from the neck down. His mother turns her life upside down to care for him, but he only wants to die to end the suffering for them both. Only able to use his right thumb to point to letters of the alphabet, he writes a letter to French President Jacques Chirac, pleading for the right to end his life. Chirac denies the request. Vincent then writes an entire book,I Ask For The Right To Die, to make his case public.
