Author s Note
They say life doesn t come with an instruction manual. But this book is an amazing instruction manual for life ! And if you read it with the instructions given here, it will be an excellent lifetime mentor through all phases of your life.
I have an extremely strong conviction in the value of mentorship and the methods to achieving meaningful success that I have followed. When I address audiences across the world, I am asked how I have applied these methods to achieve meaningful success and if I could recommend only one book on self-improvement, which would that be? This book is an answer to these questions. In fact, not just me, thousands of people whom I have mentored over the years have benefited from the methods of achieving success that this book covers. I believe everyone needs and deserves a mentor . This book can be your lifelong mentor and help you succeed in your career and life. My dream is to Mentor A Million people through this book .
Why this book?
It s similar to an adept lifetime mentor faithfully by your side to guide you through various stages of life. The ideas shared are relevant to people of ages fifteen years onwards, from high school students to senior professionals to CEOs.
It guides you in achieving meaningful success and leading a purposeful life through multidimensional and balanced life goals , which are the key to happiness, fulfilment and a regret-free life.
The first part of the book focuses on defining the person you aspire to be . It shows you a step-by-step process to define your aspirational life goals that will help you achieve meaningful success, including amazing professional success. The second part is about becoming the best version of yourself and worthy enough to realize your aspirations .
It gives you processes to structure your plans and roadmaps to guide critical skill development for succeeding in your professional and personal life. It s more like a carpenter s toolkit than a book.
It is in the realm of achievable . It s not about leaps of success made by those who are one in a million or inconceivable accounts of rare success stories. The sheer attainability of the lessons is its unique point.
Many books in this genre are authored by academicians, trainers and consultants who may not have real-life experience and may not have been there, done that . The ideas shared in this book come from the real-life experiences of the author.
It is packed with anecdotes, insights and tips from several hugely successful, world-class individuals whom I admire. These are exclusive interviews done for this book. These people have won tremendous acclaim and achieved meaningful success by upholding beliefs similar to those discussed in the book.
Several people, who have benefited from my mentoring with the process and techniques described in this book, have shared their experiences and how these have helped them. I am sure you will relate to some very well.
How to benefit from this book
The methods to success given in the book are trusted and tested. But implementation is key. You have to start doing what it suggests with all the discipline that you can muster.
First, read the book. It flows very simply with stories and makes for an engaging read. You may find some incidents from my life repeated in different chapters. It is done in order to make each chapter complete and independent, and reinforce the ideas with examples from my life.
Then, read each chapter again by placing yourself at the centre, and ponder on how it applies to you.
Then reread the chapter on defining your wheel of goals. Take a notepad and draw your own wheel of goals. Write down your long-term and short-term goals, and specific actions to be taken.
Remember, you have to first define the person you aspire to be.
Once you have defined clear goals, let the magic of passion kick in. Become obsessed with your goals.
The content in the rest of the chapters will help you become the best version of yourself and achieve success beyond your dreams.
Continue to review your progress, preferably monthly, and tweak actions if you wish to get closer to your desired results.
Once a year, thoroughly review your progress, read the book again and create new goals as needed . As you read the book again and again, you will derive new wisdom each time .
As life changes, shape and reshape your goals to match the changing contexts.
Then act and give it the best you have. You will be amazed to see how much potential you have and how far you can go.

Prologue
It was November 1962. A steam engine, puffing huge clouds of black smoke, hauled in ten or so obedient coaches at the Fatehpur railway station. The train s halt was going to be only for a few minutes.
The platform was teeming with people as usual, but today, quite peculiarly, there were mostly ladies. They were clutching the pleats of their sarees while almost sprinting, their slippers slapping against their heels . No, not to board the train. The train windows were open, and through them, one could spot bare, wooden-planked berths. Seated on them were soldiers. Dressed in army fatigues, their belongings packed in olive-green holdalls and trunks, they were on their way to an important and urgent assignment: war.
There had been a series of violent border skirmishes after the 1959 Tibetan uprising, when India had granted asylum to the Dalai Lama . The government had put in place a defensive forward policy from 1960 to hinder Chinese military patrols and logistics. As per the policy, the government placed outposts along the disputed McMahon Line at the India-China border. A war between China and India had broken out at these points.
The woman and her son stopped near one of the train s coach windows. She thrust a packet into the hands of a soldier. It was a cardigan she had knitted-a beautiful maroon one with a fascinating crossed cable-knit pattern-perfection that she alwa
