Introduction


It’s been a long time coming since my first art book, Con Artist. I bet you thought I’d given up. Not on your life, you guys in the art world can bet your arse on it. So jump on this ride and come along for the scream. If you’ve a weak heart or a dodgy bowel, then best you give it a miss, I can’t be having stiffs or piles of shit in my life, it’s bad for business!
Hell, it’s a wonderful feeling to be accepted by my fellow artists, you guys just grow on me, it’s like one big family. And it’s a bloody honour and a massive privilege to be accepted (worldwide). I salute you all. Art is art to me. Whatever you create is your own masterpiece; unique, splendid, magnifico!
I’ve travelled a long way since Con Artist. Not a lot’s changed in my prison life, but for sure my art has kept me sane. And I have a wonderful partner (I have to say my wife to be), she’s bloody gorgeous - and a very smart cookie. She herself is a brilliant artist. Speaking of which, there are other artists included in this book so you’re in for a wide selection. ‘Born Again Artist’ is more like the new era, new ideas, lots of dreams (some smashed, some nearly there). I am very proud of this book. And once I am free, the sky’s the limit. Unfortunately I am limited in what I can have material-wise, so I am still held back from creating my best work. I’m in chains, incarcerated. Denied the real McCoy. I’m like a carpenter with a rubber hammer and plastic nails. I’m the flame in the chocolate factory, but I’ve sure made the best of what I’ve got. And I’m actually getting better. My mind’s alive, I feel human. I feel a sense of worth. My anger and hate have turned into what I am today, a focused determined man on a mission of pure positivity. Hell’s fucking bells, I’m almost an angel compared to the old me! Art’s like rock ‘n roll, you either get it or you don’t… and if you don’t?
Then you’re a sad old lonely fart. Rock it, roll with the brush, slap it on, bring it alive - it’s better than sex. A pussy is only a pussy, it can’t talk. Art talks. It screams. It’s alive, powerful. Take the Mona Lisa. I turn it into the Moaning Lisa. Anybody can take on a masterpiece and turn it into something more. It’s called imagination. Use it! Don’t waste all that energy. It’s there deep in your core. Rip it out, let it scream.
Ever seen a woman’s face when she orgasms… eyes bulging, lips quivering, neck veins protruding. Hell, it’s totally insane gone mental. But it’s still lovely. Ask them! Well, so is art. But a better feeling. It can’t be beaten. It’s like a good shit! You can’t beat it. So don’t take things for granted. Especially art.. especially my art. Sadly over the last decade I’ve had lots of maggots sucking off my masterpieces, selling them. Old mates have even sold my art gifts to them. Friends, publishers, ex-screws. One fat bastard out in Spain done prints of my art and sold them on. Fucking rats on a sinking ship. I could write a book on the treacherous bastards and expose them all. But I’ll leave it at that… for now.
The only sure thing is my art will never stop till I’m on the crematorium roller and you smell my body burn (pass the toast!) And the good thing is, I’ll one day be out there to show the world my art in person… and I can’t fucking wait. You could say I’m the born again artist about to smash my way onto the art scene. Well I hope you enjoy it. It’s been a pleasure to do it. This would make a great Xmas book (come on, it’s got to be better than that 50 shades of grey crap. Who really cares about other people’s sex lives?) Art will inspire you (and it won’t give you a sexually transmitted disease or an unwanted baby!) ‘Born Again Artist’ will bring you a lot of happiness. Don’t forget, dig deep my brothers and sisters. I love you all!


This book is dedicated to the original street and graffiti artist Robbo. From one fighter to another, stay strong big man.






1 - Prison Life


Charlie’s prison artwork is arguably the style most associated with him as an artist. It is instantly recognisable, iconic and thought provoking. Yet while it conveys the brutality and inhumanity of a prison existence, his pieces also show his wonderful sense of humour.
