T he United States government is a huge operation with so many parts that it is hard to understand. Let’s see how it works, and who does the work.
Constitutional government
A fter thirteen British colonies in North America broke away from Great Britain in 1776, they formed the United States of America. Through the Revolutionary War, which ended in 1783, and for eight years after that, the country was governed by The Articles of Confederation. This document created a weak central government and left most powers with the states.
I t became clear that there were problems with the Articles, and the states created a new document, the Constitution of the United States, which was ratified in 1788. It came into effect in 1789 and has been the foundational law of the nation ever since, with a few amendments that have adjusted the document from time to time.
Three branches
T he United States government is huge, deploys great power, and spends a lot of money. But its structure is really very simple: there are three main branches of the federal government which have specific rights and duties. The three branches help keep each other from making big mistakes, in a system of “checks and balances”, and to make sure that no one branch of government or one office- holder becomes too powerful.
