I n this book, we’re going to talk about the environmental problem of water pollution. So, let’s get right to it!
W ater covers over 70% of Earth’s surface. Most of the water on Earth isn’t drinkable for humans because it’s salt water. Less than 1% of all Earth’s water is fresh water. Animals and plants need fresh water to survive. There are a few types of sea creatures that can drink salt water, but they can’t drink it in large quantities.
F resh, pure water is vital to the survival of life on Earth. Every single cell in every plant and animal is made up of 60-95% water.
Water pollution is a major environmental problem. In many developing countries, one of the major causes of human and animal deaths is the drinking of contaminated sources of water.

WHAT IS WATER POLLUTION?
W ater pollution happens when manmade chemicals or sewage dumped into water make it toxic. It becomes poisonous to the animals and plants that need it to live. Natural processes can cause water pollution as well, but most water pollution is caused by manmade industrial waste.
O ne of the reasons that water pollution is such a difficult problem to solve is because pollutants come from so many different sources. Anything that changes the chemical properties or the biological or physical properties of water has the potential to have harmful effects on life, both on land and in the water.
