County Dublin, Ireland. PREFACE
The European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions,
within the framework of its four-year rolling programme for 1981-84, is
investigating, among other matters, the question of the effects of technolo
gical development on various areas of private and working life. Four sectors
were chosen to illustrate how, and to what extent, electronic technology has
an impact on the life and work of people who come into contact with this
technology, whether as customers or as employees at their workplace.
These sectors are:
1) banking and insurance (1981)
2) supermarkets (1982)
3) public service (1983)
4) mechanical engineering (1984)
The research on Supermarkets was started in 1982. Four countries were
selected for study - Denmark, France, Ireland and the Netherlands. This
report presents the results of the research in Ireland.
The European Foundation has also compiled a consolidated report which
presents the most significant data from the national reports according to
topic areas. The interested reader is therefore also referred to that report
which is available in all the official community languages from the European
Foundation.
This publication also includes the comments of the social partners and the
government representatives, made in the course of an evaluation seminar held
on 27/28 September 1984. Read in combination, these comments define the
social and economic context within which the research project is located and
are therefore also relevant to an understanding of this national report. EVALUATION REPORTS EUROPEAN FOUNDATION FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF LIVING AND WORKING CONDITIONS
