This publication contains the proceedings of a Flax Workshop held In
Brussels, Belgium, on May, 4-5, 1988 under the auspices of the Commission
of the European Communities as part of the EEC Common Research Programme
on Plant Productivity. The objectives of the meeting were as follows:
(1) To review and disseminate current research knowledge in the European
Community.
(2) To foster interdisciplinary awareness with respect to
(a) crop improvement
(b)p culture
(c) post-harvest technology
(3) To identify the existing research strengths and déficiences.
(4) To formulate potential research strategies to encourage greater
Community self-sufficiency in flax and linseed.
From the conception of the Workshop, interest from within the
Community continued to spread through academic institutes and industrial
companies alike. Ultimately some 60 delegates from seven countries
supported the meeting to provide the scientific papers and informed
discussions reported herein. This publication indeed demonstrates the
renaissance of interest in flax and linseed.
It is appreciated that several contributors made a special effort to
write their papers in English although this was not their mother tongue.
The papers presented in the Workshop Proceedings are reproduced without
editorial corrections.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Participants at the Workshop are grateful to the Commission of the
European Communities for their sponsorship of the meeting and the
publication of the proceedings. The organisation of the Workshop was
possible thanks to the efforts of colleagues at the West of Scotland
College and the stewardship of Mme. M. Wauters, Commission of the
European Communities.
