Content: minimum 2.5 per cent of tannins, expressed as pyrogallol (C6H6O3;Mr126.1) (dried drug). CHARACTERS Macroscopic and microscopic characters described under identification tests A and B. IDENTIFICATION A. The Witch hazel stem bark occurs as curved fragments of variable dimensions according to the thickness of the branch they come from. The longest fragments measure up to 25 cm long, 2 cm wide and 2 mm thick. The outside is crazed and greyish to yellow-grey with large whitish marks. The inside is finely striated, pink-brown, sometimes presenting adherent whitish debris of wood. The fracture is fibrous in the centre. B. Reduce the Witch hazel stem bark to a powder (355). The powder is yellowish when examined under a microscope usingRchloral hydrate solution , the powder contains: fragments of hard phellem; fragments of amyloferous parenchyma; sclerous nodules and fibres with tubes containing calcium oxalate. C. Thin-layer chromatography (2.2.27).Test solution.Heat 1.0 g of powdered stem bark (355) in 10 mL ofethanolR(50 per cent V/V)for 30 min. on a water-bath under a reflux condenser. Allow to cool then, filter.
