COMMON MALLOW FOR HOMOEOPATHIC PREPARATIONS  MALVA SYLVESTRIS FOR HOMOEOPATHIC PREPARATIONS
 Malva sylvestris ad praeparationes homoeopathicas   DEFINITION  Whole, fresh, blooming plant,Malva sylvestrisL.   CHARACTERS  Macroscopic and microscopic characters described under identification tests A and B.   IDENTIFICATION  A. Herbaceous plant, biannual or perennial with its underground buds, covered with starry hairs more or less abundent. Erect stem, slightly ramose, reaching 70 cm high. Alternate, simple leaves with long petiole; palmately-lobed lamina, cordiform at the base, with dentate-crenelated margin, soft and downy by touch and sometimes with a small black spot at the base. Axillary bunches of flowers gathered in pairs or in groups of 4; calyx composed of 5 gamosepal parts, doubled with a shorter calicle composed of 3 oblong and free bracts. Corolla 3 to 4 times bigger than the calyx, 3 cm in diameter; five spread out petals, cuneiform and serrated on the upper margin with a purplish-pink coloration and reddish venation becoming purplish-blue when dessicated. Filaments of numerous stamens linked in a tube surrounding numerous uniovulate carpels. Central style ended by free stigmas.  B. Take a sample of epidermis from the underside of a leaf. Examine under a microscope using chloral hydrate solution R. Lamina epidermis composed of cells with sinuous cell-walls. Numerous stomata of anomocytic or anisocytic type with 3 to 4 subsidiary cells (2.8.3); slender unicellular and straight covering trichomes about 400 µm long; club-shaped, multicellular secretory trichomes.   TESTS  Foreign matter(2.8.2): complies with the test.  Loss on drying(2.3.22): minimum 55.0 per cent determined on 5.0 g of finely-cut drug by drying in an oven at 105 °C for 2 h.
