IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION BY ENHANCING METACOGNITIVE COMPETENCES: AN EVALUATION OF THE RECIPROCAL TEACHING METHOD __________________________________________________________________________ ANKE DEMMRICH Dissertation zur Erlangung des Grades Dr. phil. eingereicht bei der Humanwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Potsdam Potsdam März 2005 Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Baumert Prof. Dr. Joachim C. Brunstein Datum der Disputation: 10. Juni 2005 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my gratitude to the people that helped and supported me during the last years. It was quite a long way to go and without them, it wouldn’t have been possible to conduct this study, analyze all the data and finally to complete this dissertation. First, I would like to thank the participants of the study: the schools and the children who participated in the training. The children gave their best and worked very hard in their spare-time. It was not only fun to work with them, but also a very special, invaluable experience for me. The dissertation was conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin and supervised by Dr. Cordula Artelt and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Baumert. I am grateful for the technical and financial support of the project by the Max Planck Institute, but more importantly, for the help of many people there.
