December2010 2011RumorMill One of the best things about owning a Mac is the constant, inch iPad, which is still a rumor. As I get older and my vision gets never-ending rumor mill surrounding Mac products. It’s amazing poorer (I need reading glasses now) the 7 inch iPad has no to me that a relatively small player (approximately 10% of the future with me. A larger one might! total market) has such rumor mill juice to generate page after page and story after story of maybes and want-a-be products. OK sowhat’sontapfor2011? VerizontogettheiPhone – this one has been going around for awhile,andlookslikeitmightbecomingtruein2011.VerizonhadthefirstshotattheiPhoneandturneditdown.Anotherlesson in the power of the little guy. I bet you Verizon has been kickingthemselveseversincetheyturnedtheiPhonedown.AT& ThasmadehugegainsbytakingtheiPhone–andsomeheattoo. They obviously miscalculated the enormous success of the iPhonetothepointofdevastatingthenetworkinsomeareas.WillVerizonfareanybetter?Whoknows?I’mstayingwithAT&Tfor one reason: The all-you-can-eat data plan. It seems unlikely the Verizon will get as big a rush of iPhone users as AT&T did, so the drain on their network might not be as bad. iPhone 5 - What goodies will that be packed with! What happenedtothewhiteiPhone? Nextup-iPad2withFaceTime. This is one I’m waiting for I think the iPad is cool and a pretty slick device – but it doesn’t do enoughformetomeritbuyingone.Ineedsomethingthatcanreadmycameracardonlocation;theiPadrightnowdoesnotdothat. But – the inclusion of FaceTime might put me over the top! No rumor discussion can be com lete without mentionin the 7

A tablet computer with the horse power of a Macbook Pro – you canbuyafter-marketproductsbutnothingfromApple. MacOSXLion .WhathappenswhenApplerunsoutofbigcats?Whydidtheypickcatsinthefirstplace?FromwhatIsawatthespecial event a few months ago, Lion appears to be a very significantchangetotheMacOSinyears.WhathappenswhenApple reaches Mac OS 10.10 – XI? I think there was a 10.4.11. With Apple dropping “computer” from its name, is the last Mac off the line not far away? Steve Jobs is quoted as calling desktops –“Trucks”.Hesaystherewillalwaysbeaneedfortrucksandhe’s right. If it weren’t for his “trucks” I would be out of a job. NCMUGwouldlookalotdifferent.HollywoodandTVwouldlookmuchdifferentandacompanycalledAVIDwouldruleTVandmovies–welltheyprettymuchdonowbutthatischanging.

TherearenewApplerumorseveryday...iLife‘11issupposedtohaveamysteryapplication–whoreallyknows–butthat’swhat makesitsofun!NobodyelsegetsthetkindofpressAppledoeswithnewproducts.It’suncannyhowtheyareabletodoit!Asweputthecapper on 2010 and look forward to 2011 we can only hope that Applecontinuestocreateproductthatgeneratesuchmediaattention and a ver stron rumor mill! ~ ohn Steale
