In particular, it provides graphical representations with a semantic foundation for modeling system requirements, behavior, structure, and parametric equations that can integrate with a broad range of engineering analysis. SysML represents a subset of UML 2.0 with extensions to satisfy the requirements of the UML™ for Systems Engineering RFP. The OMG SysML™ Specification was adopted in May 2006. The OMG Systems Modeling Language (OMG SysML™) is a general-purpose, graphical, modeling
language for specifying, analyzing, designing, and verifying complex systems that may include
hardware, software, information, personnel, procedures, and facilities. In particular, it provides graphical
representations with a semantic foundation for modeling system requirements, behavior, structure, and
parametric equations that can integrate with a broad range of engineering analysis. SysML represents a

This tutorial provides an introduction to how SysML can address your systems engineering needs
including:
background and motivation, an overview of the SysML diagram types and language
concepts, and a demonstration of how the language can be used throughout the Model-based Systems
Engineering (MBSE) process. A class exercise is also included to help solidify the student’s
understanding of the language.
Attendees should gain appreciation of the value of MBSE versus legacy document-centric methods,
awareness of the graphical notation, and a high level understanding of when and how a Systems
Engineer can exploit the various diagrams and models as part of their process.
You should attend this tutorial if you are a:

The Presenter:
Sanford Friedenthal is a Principal Systems Engineer at Lockheed
Martin and currently leads an effort to enable model based systems
development (MBSD) across the corporation. His experience includes
the application of systems engineering throughout the system life
cycle from conceptual design, through development and production
on a broad range of systems in aerospace and defense. He has been a
systems engineering department manager, and a lead developer of
advanced systems engineering processes and methods including the
Lockheed Martin Integrated Enterprise Process and the Object-
Oriented Systems Engineering Method (OOSEM). Mr. Friedenthal
was a leader of the Industry Standards effort through the Object
Management Group (OMG) and INCOSE to develop the Systems
Modeling Language (OMG SysML ™) that was adopted by the OMG
in 2006. Sanford is co-author of the recently published book called “A
Practical Guide to SysML”.
For those who have Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) designation from INCOSE, the tutorial
counts for up to 8.0 Professional Development Units (PDUs). The exact number of PDUs depends on the finish
time.
Registration and Important Details
The tutorial is open to INCOSE members and non-members, but participation is limited to the first 180
registrants.
Our host’s policies limit attendance to United States persons only
(U.S. citizens or green card holders,
and not an employee of a foreign company/government/entity).
The cost is $120 for INCOSE regular members, $50 for INCOSE Senior members and for students, and $165 for
other non-members. Non-members will receive the member rate if they apply for INCOSE membership at the
time of registration. (An application form for INCOSE membership is attached as the last page of this
announcement.) Raytheon (host facility) employees and Lockheed Martin (instructor facility) employees receive a

From I-25 in south Denver metro area: Go north on I-25. Pass the Belleview Avenue exit and take I-
225 north to Sixth Avenue (exit 9). Go right (east) on Sixth Avenue. Pass Chambers Road and turn right (south) at
the next stoplight, Centretech Parkway. Go right on Centretech Parkway. Travel for several minutes. Turn right
on Hughes Drive. (If you get to Airport Blvd/Buckley Road, you’ve gone too far by 1 street.) Building S79 is the
3rd building on the right (#16510 E. Hughes Drive); it is the last three-story building near the middle of Hughes
Drive; it is across the street from a large parking lot. The Raytheon facility is near Buckley Air Force Base.
