Food Industry Overview: Thai cuisine is renowned the world over for its rich and enticing flavors and exotic blend of spices. The richness of this food will not only reward ones palate, but can also be discovered with investments in the vibrant and rapidly growing food industry. Thailand has the second largest economy in Southeast Asia and is one of the world’s leading food exporting countries. And, it is the world’s number one producer of natural rubber, rice, canned and frozen seafood, canned tuna, canned pineapples, and cassava, and the number two producer of sugar. Food exports alone in the first half of 2006 were in the amount of US$6.8 billion, representing a 5.9% annual growth. Major products include seafood and processed foods, in particular shrimp, processed tuna, canned fruit, and cooked chicken. And, according to the Thai National Food Institute (NFI), the country’s export earnings from the food sector will continue grow by 10.3% in 2007, due to improved product quality. With one of the most advanced processed food sectors in Southeast Asia, this sector accounts for near 15% of Thailand’s manufacturing output and is getting stronger. Approximately 9,000 food processing companies in Thailand produce annual earnings of about US$25 billion. Thailand’s food sector has superlative growth potential as the country maintains its position as an industry world leader through increased use of technology and improved standards in efficiency, production and hygiene.
