DREAMSEverybody dreams, but there are few who placeany importance to the phenomena of sleep. Beforewe can begin to comprehend or even analyzedreams, whether our dreams are symbolic orotherwise, we must first divert from our mind ourmaterialistic conceptions of what the individualcalled man really is. The external or physical man,is no more the man than the coat he wears. Thephysical man is only an instrument of which thereal inner man or soul expresses itself in thephysical universe. Various materialistic theorieshave been given in the past, trying to explain themighty phenomena of dreams, but these theorieshave always been more or less unsatisfactory.Why? Because the-materialist tries to explain theriddle of human existence without an individualhuman spirit his explanation will always beunsatisfactory.Dreams afford a separation of soul and body. Assoon as the senses become torpid, the inner manwithdraws from the outer. There are three differentways which afford this separation. First, naturalsleep. Second, induced sleep, such as hypnotism,mesmerism or trance. Third, death. In the abovetwo cases the man has only left his physical bodytemporarily, whereas in death he has left it forever.In the case of death, the link which unites soul andbody, as seen by clairvoyant vision, is broken, butin trance or sleep it is released. The real man is

then in the astral world. He now functions in hisastral body, which becomes a vehicle forexpressing consciousness, just as the physicalbody is an instrument for expressingconsciousness in the waking state.Consciousness is not annihilated when the man isin the Astral world, it is only temporarilysuspended. Just the same as in the case of death.The man is fully conscious in the astral regionsclothed in the body of the Astral matter. This Astralbody is in the physical and extends little beyond it.The Astral world is here and now, interpenetratingthe physical, and not in some remote region abovethe clouds as so many imagine.* * * * *Man is a soul. He has a body. He expresseshimself in three worlds. While he functions in thephysical body, viz., physical, emotional and mentalworlds. Just as the Astral interpenetrates thephysical the mental interpenetrates the Astral. TheAstral body in which man functions during sleep isthe body of emotions and desires and heexpresses these desires and emotions in thephysical life.* * * * *The Astral body in which man functions duringsleep is very subtle matter. It resembles thephysical. In fact, it is an exact reproduction of it,but it can only be seen by clairvoyant vision. Whena man leaves his body in sleep or death, the spirit

Let a man go to bed say teno'clock. Let him sleep until six next morning. Theordinary man will awaken feeling refreshed andready for his daily toil. Let him go to bed at ten, lieawake all night, next morning he will not feelrefreshed and during the day he may feel sluggishand sleepy. Let him go to bed and lie awake nightafter night for a few weeks, what will be the result?He will be a physical wreck. These things go on whether wewill them or not. Although the spirit leaves the bodyin sleep as previously stated, there is still a

magnetic connection with soul and body. Thismagnetic connection acts on the sympatheticnervous system and the cerebro spinal whichcontrols the functions of the human organism. Insleep the astral man may be in the immediatevicinity of his sleeping recuperating physical bodyor it may be thousands of miles away in space, themagnetic connection still exists regardless of thedistance. No matter what distance the astral manis away from his physical body, he can return to itwith the rapidity of thought, as the saying is, for itis the soul that thinks, the brain is only aninstrument of the soul.Many of our dreams may be attributed tosubconscious memory, for when our mind iscentered on a certain train of thought thesethoughts are apt to filter through into the consciousstate in sleep. The subconscious memory cannotbe truthfully called a dream, for it is only a memoryof something we have previously perceived inreality or imagination. One only has to examine hissubconscious dream in the light of reason toeliminate them. Telepathy does explain some ofour dreams, for just as it is possible for minds toreceive telepathic communications (thoughttransference) from another in the walking state, itis also possible for the so-called dead to havetelepathic communication with the living, forthought is a power, its limitation is unknown.While many of our dreams may be traced tosubconscious memory or telepathy andhappenings of material affairs of our daily lives,

others are undoubtedly the astral happenings ofthe ego while functioning in the etheric regions.There we meet not only the misnamed dead butalso many of those who are still in the physicalbody, and let me state here that many of ourdifficult problems of physical life are worked out insleep.The old axiom, "I will go to sleep on it," has agreater significance than is generally attributed toit, for sleep and dreams have more to do inshaping your lives than you have any idea of. Youcan go to school in sleep and study anything youare studying in physical life and make marvelousprogress. This requires much training, however.Keeping the mind free from evil thoughts is mostessential to enable the sincere investigator to enterthat larger state of consciousness, for the thoughtsof our waking state have a more or less effect onthe ego during sleep. These two lives, of course, is theexpression of his one existence. The highlydeveloped, spiritual man as he retires into theinterior world during sleep, realizes a state of

spiritual bliss that is far beyond the stage ofordinary mortals. Man has been in the habit oflooking at himself as a mass of flesh and musclewith a slight chance of realizing the Divinity withinhim. As the earnest soul gradually arouses himselfhe finds his proper place in the universe, for withinhim are all the attributes of deity, and when hereaches the end of the long evolutionary journeythat is ahead of him he will find himself and knowwhat he is destined to be, a God.

VARIETIES OF DREAMSIn order to distinguish and classify the differentkinds of dreams in which everyone has anexperience they may be divided into fourvariations. Nearly all dreams may be classifiedunder this heading:1. Physical Stimulus.2. Subconscious memory.3. Telepathy.4. The Actual Astral experience of the Ego orSoul in the Astral region.Physical Stimulus may be the direct cause ofimpressing certain ideas on the physical brainwhich may appear to be a reality. The falling of abook, picture or any article in the room may causethe sleeper to dream of firearms; a soldier maydream of a battlefield; a sensitive female maydream it is a burglar; a person who throws the bedclothes off him on a cold night may dream of snowand ice; the continual dropping of water from afaucet in the room of the sleeper has been thedirect cause of a friend of mine dreaming of apassenger train; the steady tramping of footstepsoverhead may be the cause of dreaming ofthunder storms, etc. We must also take intoconsideration the physical and mentalenvironments of the sleeper.

THE SUBCONSCIOUS MEMORYThe subconscious memory may be the directcause of certain dreams. When the mind iscentered on certain things, the sleeper goes overhis life again and again in phantom fashion. Helives over the experiences of his daily life. Veryoften the ego enlightens the sleeper of somematerial thing for his own benefit, which he mayuse advantageously in his waking state, but as hegenerally looks at the phenomena of dreams as anhallucination of the brain, he allows many a goldenopportunity to slip through his fingers because thematerialist's brain cannot grasp things of the spirit.All the knowledge and rubbish of our past lives isstored up in the subconscious mind where itremains in minute form. Memory is only theawakening of the sub-conscious mind, a long andforgotten incident, that has made a deepimpression on the mind, is apt to filter through intothe conscious state in dreams. In time of illness orwhen one's vitality is low, the dream picture of thepast is apt to play a very prominent part in one'ssleep. Childhood and long-forgotten scenes comeup frequently and appear as real and genuine as ifthey had only happened the previous day. Theyfrequently give the dreamer joy or sorrow,according to the stages he passed through.Even action of past lives may come up into the
